Herbal drug technology involves the use of indigenous drug from plants origin to manufacture value added herbal medicine with proper integration of scientific technology and traditional knowledge. The number of patient seeking herbal therapy is growing exponentially, this is because of the belief they are with lesser side effect when compared to allopathy. One of the main challenges faced by herbal drug is that the active constituents of plant may be polar or water soluble and are poorly absorbed due to their large size and lipid solubility. These water soluble constituents can be converted to lipid soluble complex called phytosomes or herbosomes. These are one of the noval drug delivery system constituting a hydrophilic bioactive phytoconstituent of herb incorporated with a phospholipid. This have shown better pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamics drug property when compared to conventional herbal extract which contributes to increased bioavailability owing to enhanced capacity to cross the cell membrane and reach the blood stream. The proposed reviews on significance of phytosomes in herbal drug technology have shown better bioavailability and therapeutic action than conventional herbal extract for curing disease.
